Had a ghastly dream about my results and was lying in bed thinking about them when Ma came up with an envelope. There was ordinary handwriting on it so I thought it couldn’t be... but then I opened it and there was a slip of paper inside. This was IT. I felt all trembly as I pulled it out.

 Eng. Lit. B; French B (Oral B); Geography B; German D (Oral C); Latin E.

I must say, I'm rather thrilled! I haven’t failed anything! And every subject is two grades up from what I thought it’d be except for Latin which is two grades down. I’m a bit disappointed about the Orals, I think French should have been an A because my French conversation is three or four times better than my German. Went round to Mrs Reid and told her, she was delighted!

Lucy came round for tennis - she’s done marvellously in languages! A for English Lang, A for French, and B for German!  Mr Fraser congratulated us and we did rallies and serves. Lucy got the most absolutely fab dress at Scallyways for a wedding, plus a turquoise Biba type hat. Wish I’d got a hat for Diana’s wedding.

When Mrs Gilpin came to fetch Henrietta and Clare from tennis, she and Sozzy talked about boarding schools and I must say, they make a very good point about how going away makes you not take everything for granted. There’s a lot in this, I think. It depends on the child, but I seriously think boarding school would do Chump a great deal of good. If a child of 12 still doesn’t make her own bed at weekends something has gone wrong somewhere. Mummy keeps saying, “what’s the point of putting up with something for the sake of it - what use is it in life being able to endure things?” Well, I don’t think she quite sees the point.

There’s a tremendous advantage in learning to think of other people beside yourself - that is what it all boils down to!

If someone’s extremely sensitive of course it would be absolutely disastrous to send them to boarding school. Everyone’s different. Talking about education, what I regret, and always shall regret, is not going to a mixed school. That’s why I’m longing to go to University.

Champ and Jane played the whole day and again dressed up as witches - they covered their faces in ghastly pink make-up!!

Saw T.O.T.P – they had that Grocer Jack song on again. For the rest of the evening Chump, Jane and me couldn’t stop singing, “Jack, Jack, is it true what Mummy said, you won’t come back, on no no”…! Had fab supper, steak in pastry, but I simply couldn’t finish it. I think I ate too many biscuits for tea.
